We asked readers to tell us what car company deserves to be called the coolest, and the majority of you responded with esoteric automakers. Good. There was a healthy dose of automakers known to those outside the cognoscenti, such as Mazda, which is beloved by many. Also good. But not one mention of cool British automaker Bristol? Really? Anyway, here are the companies readers think are the coolest:

They prove time and time again, ICE was no where near it’s potential. The CCX could run on pump gas, E-85 and bio fuel, they’ve incorporated single gear Transmissions, free valve tech, a freakin clutch manual that switches to a full auto (high level explanation, more like an auto that mimics a full manual), a 1400hp 3 cylinder...I’m sure they’ve discussed doing some other crazy thing from the 1:1 to the Gemera, while knocking on 300mph’s door and still breaking performance records.

Mansory

This is gonna be a polarizing take because 1) they don’t actually make cars, so much as heavily modify them and 2) very very few people here will actually agree, but it took me a really long time to get to this point and I have to give credit where credit is due.

You’re probably thinking of one car company but it is definitely not that one. What I’m thinking of is Mansory.

Now you’re probably thinking, “dude, nobody should be buying these statement pieces for insecure egocentric blowhards with money that outnumbers sense 1,000,000-to-1" but lemme tell you, there are very very few people who are willing to hack apart rare, exotic unobtainium and turn it into even rarer, exotic (and oftentimes uglier) unobtainium. If I was buying a completely bespoke one-of-one car that can be a better representation of my flaccid and shallow personality than I could ever be, I’m asking these guys to hack apart my nonexistent Ferrari or Lamborghini into a hodgepodge of forged carbon, chameleon paint, and unnatural cyan-colored leather that nobody else will have.

Let’s be real too. There are tons of car companies that do this, and they are specialists. There’s at least a dozen for classic Porsches and Ferraris and other niche cars like Subaru (Prodrive), Lancia (Kimera, Automobili Amos), Alfa Romeo (Totem), but when you’re talking about so many different rabbit holes for people doing what is essentially the same exact thing, who among them is standing out when the color-shifting widebody Urus Coupe shows up? Drive a Matchbox car or a Hot Wheels car. They’re both relative versions of cool, but very different types.

Lancia

I’m not the first to say it here, but the answer IS Lancia. What’s super disappointing, though is to think about how many manufacturers could once have made the claim and absolutely cannot do that anymore. Aston? Wonderful, but no longer cool, since maybe the V8s. Jaguar? Not since the early XJs. Lotus? Not after the Exige. Volvo? Still swinging, but maybe not since the 240s and 260s. BMW? All the E3Xs, and not really since. Mazda’s close, as is Alfa, and maybe Isuzu was. McLaren and some others are just too expensive to fit. Anyway, there are some fine cars out there today, but very few of their builders can claim to be “cool” any longer.

It’s Lancia. The company that built the D50 that launched the Ferrari car brand? Lancia. The company that dominated rallying for nearly three decades? Lancia. The first V engine? Lancia. The Aurelia B20 looks like something a villain would drive in Batman the Animated Series. The Stratos is an icon. The 037 is a world-beater. The Delta S4 is forty years old and still goes from 0-60 MPH as quickly as a modern F1 car ... except on dirt. Lancia is the coolest car company.

Dodge

Let’s go with actual car companies, not esoteric niche builders...in which case the answer is Dodge. Everyone else cowered at supplying cool cars—just do a belly flop and pump BOWs (boxes on wheels) out of the factories, but not Dodge. Right up until the last minute, they’ve kept the street rod culture alive with their over-the-top Challengers and Chargers. As if anyone actually needs a Hellcat—but since Dodge was outrageous enough to build those monsters; many, many car fans are glad for it.

And if those cars aren’t cool enough since they’re so anti-BOW, you can order a carbon fiber ‘70 Charger from your Dodge dealership—the enduring popularity of 2nd gen Chargers—it’s always there. Course it’ll cost you half a million dollars.

Mazda

The correct answer is the company that makes these.

Im gonna say Mazda. Sure, any company can make an overpriced supercar with 1,000 hp, but there’s something inherently cool about a small car company bucking trends in the rest of the automotive industry and paying attention to details and quality. Every mazda out now has a near-luxury level interior, good value, and decent driving dynamics. They don’t overuse touch screens, have well-designed storage, seats, buttons, and are decently reliable. All while being a fraction of the size of its competitors financially, and still selling something like the Miata and nearly perfecting it. For a car company that I personally wouldn’t even buy a car from (i want something faster and sportier than any of their normal cars), i have to give them hella props.

Aston Martin

To me, it’s not the car that is cool, it’s the driver. A cool actor in a cool role can define a car and the company as being cool.

And this leads to Aston Martin.

From Sean Connery

To David[sic] Craig

The Cool Spy from the UK has been generally seen in an Aston Martins,

And although I personally think that a lot of dead companies from the 1930s made much cooler cars back in the “gangster era”, I have to admit that the link of Cool = James Bond = Aston Martin is strong.

For me it’s gotta be Alfa. No stupid styling shouting at everyone how fast or world-saving you are, just beautiful sheetmetal around a fantastic driver’s car.

Cool cars are driven by people who know they’re good and don’t need to overtly show they’re good, (cough BMW and Dodge). And don’t necessarily go with the trends because sometimes the trends are stupidly uncool (ex Tesla).

Galloway

Probably a car no one has heard of, Galloway.

A car company run by women making cars for women in Scotland in the 1920s. The factory was hydroelectrically powered (with back up steam engines) and had tennis courts on the roof. If that is not cool enough, the company offered apprenticeships for ladies of three years, the equivalent for men was five years. The reason for this disparity was that during the war women had worked in munitions factories and that men had not gained the same skills.

The cars were good, not very cool, but good, there were more than 4000 customers between 1920 and 1928.

The factory still exists, but it does not make cars.

The only cars they made themselves, are now worth $1 Million+ (The 260, 289 and 427 Cobras + 6 Daytona’s.)

And, they just make other people’s good cars, even better.

(See Ford Mustangs and a good chunk of Dodge’s 80s lineup.)

Citroen, of course. From the Traction Avant to the DS to the 2CV to the SM to the XM, and even all the way to the Cactus. Just cool after cool after cool. And other than the SM, cool that mere mortals could actually afford. Even Peugeot couldn’t entirely water them down.
