Maserati broke new ground Monday, becoming the first luxury carmaker to release a high-performance, all-electric convertible supercar, which it’s calling the GranCabrio Folgore. The new car joins Maserati’s lineup of EVs, which also includes the Grecale Folgore and the stunning GranTurismo Folgore.

Unveiled in Italy, the car looks just like a GranTurismo with its roof removed, which is no bad thing. Under the hood, it’s got the same 800-volt powertrain as the GranTurismo, but a lower top speed of 180 miles per hour. Despite being 20 mph slower than it’s hard-top cousin, the GranCabrio still walks away with the title of fastest convertible EV in the world.

But this car is about more than just headline speed, it’s packed full of the kinds of design details and neat flourishes that you expect from a luxury Italian convertible.

So sit back, relax and get to know the new Maserati GranCabrio Folgore with our gallery looking at the new EV from every angle. To find out more about the car and its specs, you can also read the full announcement on its launch right here.

Maserati has proudly rolled out the GranCabrio Foglore with its triple-motor setup, 800-volt powertrain and top speed of 180 miles per hour. That top speed makes the GranCabrio the fastest electric convertible you can buy right now, but that’s a pretty small segment that’s currently only occupied by the likes of Mini and Fiat.

The GranCabrio Folgore’s eco credentials run deeper than just its battery power. Inside, the car can be optioned with a new material that Maserati says has been made from recycled marine plastics, so that’s things like fishing nets.

The material can be laser-etched to cover it in ornate patterns and textures. It can be further customized through the brand’s Fuoriserie program, which allows buyers to pick and choose the colors, materials and finishes on their shiny new car.

To set the electric Folgore cars out from Maserati’s range of gas-powered models, the new cars are festooned with copper details. Inside, there’s an optional carbon fiber weave that uses real copper fibers in its makeup.

On the outside, Maserati has stuck copper badges across the car, including the Folgore branding, the GranCabrio name badge and even on the brand’s signature trident logo.

The design team at Maserati say they wanted to keep the EV unmistakably Maserati. This means it still has the wide open grille up front that has been synonymous with the brand since its racing days.

Like the Grecale and GranTurismo, the front end of the GranCabrio also features lights that sit higher than the grille, in keeping with the brand’s signature style.

Inside the GranCabrio, you’ll find four meticulously finished seats that can just about squeeze in four real-life adults. In the back, there’s no bench seat to try and sneak in a fifth person, instead there’s a center console running through the middle of the car that packs things like cup holders and temperature controls.

This is a convertible, of course, so the big talking point is the new roof that Maserati has fitted to the electric roadster. On the GranCabrio, it takes the form of a folding fabric roof that can be specced out in a few different colors, including shades of blue, black and grey.

Like every modern convertible, the GranCabrio’s roof folds away in a wonderfully synchronized display. It packs neatly away into the trunk of the car, meaning the car looks just as good with its roof up or down.

The roof itself can fold up and down in less than 20 seconds at speeds of up to 31 mph.

With the windows down, the roof will open in 14 seconds and close back up in 16. If you want to keep the windows up to save yourself from the elements, opening it up takes 18 seconds and closing it again is finished in just 20.

The laser-etching process adds tons of customization options to Maserati, as the design can be easily tweaked and changed without the need for new molds, die and other old-fashioned cutting tools.

In the demo car here, the seats are etched with a design that Maserati says was inspired by the aurora borealis and it’s ornate light show in the skies above the North Pole.

Despite having space for a whole roof to fit back there, the GranCabrio does still have a bit of a trunk. In fact, Maserati says there’s space for five-cubic-feet of stuff, which should just about be enough room for all your hopes and dreams.

Despite all the changes, upgrades and modernization that’s going on with the GranCabrio, one classic Maserati detail remains: the clock. Now, instead of being an analog design, it’s a digital display that can be tweaked to show the time, g-force and other interesting data about your driving.
