The 2024 Ford Mustang has finally shown up at dealers, and whether you’re a Mustang fan or not, you have to appreciate the fact that Ford continues to offer a number of real color options. Yes, green is gone for now, and a lot of your choices are pretty boring grayscale options, but in a world where so many vehicles are only offered with a few boring paint choices (we’re looking at you, Hyundai Ioniq 5), we’ll take what we can get. Here’s how we’d rank the 12 paint colors that Ford currently offers.

If you’re spending your hard-earned money on a new Ford Mustang, you can do so much better than Iconic Silver Metallic. It just screams rental car. You bought a Mustang, not a Chevrolet Malibu. Please, pick literally anything else.

An Oxford-White Mustang is also a common choice for rental car fleets, so consider these two essentially tied. I’ve just grown even less interested in Iconic Silver Metallic lately, so I’ll give Oxford White a slight edge here.

10: Shadow Black

Shadow Black is a common color and isn’t terribly interesting, which means it’s never going to rank highly. Still, there are a lot of people out there who legitimately want a black Mustang, and I can respect that. It’s also a much better choice than the previous two.

Carbonized Gray Metallic is still gray, but there’s something just different enough about it that I’d rather have it than Shadow Black. At the very least, you went for something other than silver, white or black, and you should be commended for doing so.

Like with the first two options, figuring out how to rank Dark Matter Gray Metallic and Carbonized Gray Metallic was a tough one. In the end, my gut said to go with Dark Matter Gray Metallic, but it may as well be a coin flip, and no one should be getting into fights over which gray is the superior one.

If you fly into Miami or Los Angeles, you can probably find a Race Red Mustang at the rental counter, but it’s still red. And the Mustang will always look good in red. Arguably, it’s one of the best no-cost paint options that you could go with even if it’s bound to be pretty common.

Now we’re really getting somewhere. If you have a Vapor Blue Metallic Mustang, that’s most likely a color you specifically wanted. You didn’t take the first Mustang that you could find a deal on. As a result, its ranking reflects that commendable choice.

Compared to Race Red, Rapid Red Metallic Tinted Clearcoat is a better paint choice. It’s just going to stand out that extra little bit compared to other red Mustangs. Still, you have to pay $495 to get it, which means you really have to appreciate the difference to justify the extra cost since strangers probably won’t notice.

We’re big fans of blue cars here at Jalopnik, and an Atlas Blue Metallic Mustang is no exception. Unlike Rapid Red Metallic Tinted Clearcoat, it also gets a bonus point for being a no-cost option. If you’re spending $45,000 on a new car, an extra $500 may not be that big of a deal, but it’s the principle, man.

A Mustang painted in Grabber Blue Metallic looks so good, we’re a little surprised that Ford doesn’t charge extra for it. It’s also a color that nobody accidentally buys. Odds are, anyone driving a Grabber Blue Mustang either shopped around until they found the exact car they wanted, or they ordered it directly from Ford. Bravo, Grabber Blue owners.

OK, here we go. Ford finally brought back a yellow Mustang. Meanwhile, Toyota will sell Canadians a yellow Prius but is too scared to do the same thing here. If you’re going to drive a Mustang, especially a Mustang GT, you’re not exactly flying under the radar. Be bold. Go all-out and get it in Yellow Splash Metallic.

Blue Ember Metallic isn’t going to be an inexpenive choice. Not only is it only available on the Mustang Dark Horse Premium, which starts at about $65,000 including destination, but you also have to add the $1,500 Dark Horse Appearance Package to get it. Still, it’s an absolutely fantastic color that looks different depending on the angle and the lighting. It’s not quite as loud as Yellow Splash Metallic, but we absolutely love it.
